Spider-Man Back in Black Mini-Review.

Filed under: comics — virtuadept @ 1:13 pm

From the Amazon book description:

Spider-Man Back in Black

The entire status-quo-shattering BACK IN BLACK saga, collected in one mammoth oversized hardcover! reeling in the aftermath of CIVIL WAR, Peter Parker has plenty of reasons to consider a change of wardrobe: Black is his state of mind. But the worst is yet to come for Spider-Man! In AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, events are set in motion that will forever change life of your favorite web-slinger. There IS no going back! In FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN, the secrets of the alternate Uncle Ben are revealed, but not before the Sandman attacks! And in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN, younger, less-experienced versions of our web-spinning hero begin appearing all over the city, causing havoc wherever they go. Can Peter stop them, and whoever’s behind them, before more lives are lost? Collecting Amazing Spider-Man #539-543, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #17-23 and Annual #1, Sensational Spider-Man #35-40 and Annual #1.

So, something horrible has happened in Peter’s life thanks to his poor decisions made during the Civil War issues (Amazing Spider-Man 529-538). Peter is now on the war path, donning the black suit to show to the world that the kid gloves are off, that it’s no-holds-barred. Like his suit, the new Spider-Man is much darker, and out for blood. To call this a cross-over is a bit of an overstatement. The story lines in Friendly really doesn’t have that much to do with what’s going on in Amazing, although much of what happens in Sensational is related. But the general theme and mood of the books is pretty similar across all three titles in this collection. Some people are going to be ticked off at this new direction that our normally happy-go-lucky wall-crawler has taken. But personally I like what they are doing with this story arc, and look forward to how they resolve it with One More Day. The main beef I have with this “cross-over event” is that it is 19 issues of Spider-Man and the central plot element is still unresolved at the end of it. Fortunately there’s a lot of action going on here so it isn’t too drawn out and I did enjoy reading it. 8/10

Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness Mini Review.

Filed under: comics — virtuadept @ 8:04 am

Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness - this is a 5-issue mini series that stars Bruce Campbell Ash from the Evil Dead series of movies. Ash winds up in a universe very similar to the Marvel 616 universe… except in this universe a lot of the Marvel super-heroes have been turned into zombies! Super zombies! This story is absolutely worthless to anyone not familiar with the M.U. and probably (to a lesser extent) Evil Dead. But if you’re a fan of both Marvel and Mr. Campbell, you could spend an evening on a lot less hilarious fare. A lot of the humor is just in the art itself, how some of the super heroes and villains look in zombie form. But there’s also some really funny dialog in most of the issues. The story actually starts off kind of slow but by issue 5 i had a big ass grin on my face and the ending was very satisfying. Was it predicable? Sort of but not quite in the way I expected. And the bits with Ash and Dr. Doom were worth the price of admission alone. As I said, a lot of the humor requires prior knowledge of the characters and events from M.U. and E.D. so give this a pass if that doesn’t fit you, but if it does, as Zombie Le Peregrine would say, bon apetite! 8/10

Sub-Mariner: Revolution Mini Review.

Filed under: comics — virtuadept @ 7:59 am

Sub-Mariner: Revolution - IMPERIOUS REX! The bad boy of Marvel, Namor, king of Atlantis, aka Sub-Mariner is back for his own 6 issue mini-series. After the events of Marvel Civil War, relations between the United States and Atlantis have been seriously strained. In the first few pages of this series Namor finds himself ones again the target of U.S. wrath. It’s difficult to mention anything about the plot of this book without major spoilers, so I’ll speak generally. This book is mostly political but has quite a bit of fighting in it (more than I expected). The dialog is sometimes spot-on, and at other times harmed by blatant mischaracterization. There are a few glaring plot holes and cases of plot-induced-stupidity, but overall, this was quite more enjoyable for me than I expected it to be. To fully appreciate this book it would help if you have read Civil War previously, especially the main C.W. mini and the Civil War Frontlines mini, because a lot of what happens in this book is a direct result of events that happened in those (although the first issue of this mini does summarize some of it). I would say you do not have to be a fan of Namor to enjoy this book, because I’m not, I don’t really like him or know much about his history prior to Civil War and the New Avengers Illuminati series. I think based on this outing, Namor is probably overlooked by a lot of comic readers and under-estimated. But he is still an anti-hero. Overall it was a decent read but probably not a good jumping on point for anyone not familiar with current events in the Marvel Universe. 7/10

Mini-Review - Anita Blake.

Filed under: comics — virtuadept @ 8:12 am

Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Guilty Pleasures, Vol 1 - this is a graphic novel based on a series of novels by Laurell K Hamilton. it is about Anita Blake, a human woman who is known among vampires as the “Executioner”. the police hire Anita to find and if necessary destroy vampires who break the law. in the world of Anita Blake vampires are legal citizens, and you can’t just go wasting them if they are behaving themselves. when they get out of line, Anita is there to take them down. Anita is also a necromancer who can raise the dead as zombies (for a time). What could she be up against when the vampire community is so desperate to stop a serial vampire killer that they turn to the Executioner to help them track down the killer? this is an excellent introduction to a really cool vampire story, but unfortunately this entire book is mostly character introduction. some cool things happen but mostly it’s just setting up the story and at the end very little has been resolved. so if you do get this you will be in for a wait because they have not yet published the 2nd half of this story even in comic form, much less in a compiled graphic novel like this one. aside from being a bit irked that there is no closure for this volume, the artwork is great, the story is very cool and “adult”, and the characters are all interesting. 8.5/10
